Title: Performance prediction for coherent optical transponder using accurate model
One of the key transmission performance indicators for coherent optical transponder is the bit error rate (BER) versus optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) characteristics. We have developed a model to predict BER versus OSNR at various receiver optical power (ROP). The model has three parameters, which are related to BER noise floor, filter mismatching, and OSNR value without noise loading. The model is applied to transponders with high baud rate and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). By considering the influence of baud rate on the fitting parameters, accurate prediction of performance for coherent transponder can be achieved over various baud rates. Novel applications enabled by this model include in-field measurement of BER versus OSNR, simple abstraction of coherent transponder, accurate OSNR monitor and coherent optical channel monitor.
Yang Yue is a Hardware Engineer at Juniper Networks in USA. He received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and the M.S. degree in Optics from Nankai University, Tianjin, China, in 2004 and 2007, respectively. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA, in 2012.

Dr. Yue’s current research interests include Integrated Photonics, Free-space and Fiber Optics, Optical Interconnect, Optical Communications and Networking. His research on “orbital-angular-momentum mode division multiplexing in fiber” has been published by Science. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed journal papers and conference proceedings, 6 invited papers, 1 book chapter, 15 issued or pending patents. Furthermore, he has given ~30 invited presentations. He is the Editor Board Member for two scientific journals. He also served as committee member for ~20 international conferences, reviewer for ~40 prestigious journals. 

Dr. Yue is one of the recipients of the 2011 IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowship and 2011 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad. He received the Department Spotlight Award and CEO Team Excellence Award from Juniper Networks USA in 2016. He has been selected to 2014-2016 Edition of “Marquis Who's Who in America”, 2015-2016 Edition of “Marquis Who's Who in the World”, “IBC Top 100 Engineers 2015”, and “IBC Top 100 Professionals 2016”.
