|Title: Technology and Challenge in Packet-Optical Engine|
During the past few decades, to meet the ever-growing capacity requirement, several degrees of freedom of photon have been efficiently utilized to multiplex low-speed electrical data streams. To further move towards high-speed, low-cost, low-power ethernet, integrated photonics seems to be the only possible route. Packet-optical engine can potentially fuel the optical transport network in a more efficient and manageable manner.
We introduce the latest trend of pluggable optical module form factors, and review the latest progress and challenges of client and line-side packet-optical products in the optical communications and networking industry. Furthermore, we discuss our recent demonstration on a compact solution to timing skew and power imbalance of dual-polarization quadrature amplitude modulation (DP-QAM) transmitter in the packet-optical module. An integrated photodiode can be implemented to perform the function, by simply monitoring the transmitter output power. Fast detection algorithm for arbitrary skew is also proposed and experimentally verified. The scheme is compatible with different modulation formats, flexible data sequences, and variable waveforms.
Yang Yue is a Hardware Engineer at Juniper Networks in USA. He received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and the M.S. degree in Optics from Nankai University, Tianjin, China, in 2004 and 2007, respectively. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA, in 2012.
Dr. Yue’s current research interests include Integrated Photonics, Free-space and Fiber Optics, Optical Interconnect, Optical Communications and Networking. His research on “orbital-angular-momentum mode division multiplexing in fiber” has been published by Science. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed journal papers and conference proceedings, 6 invited papers, 1 book chapter, 15 issued or pending patents. Furthermore, he has given ~30 invited presentations. He is the Editor Board Member for two scientific journals. He also served as committee member for ~20 international conferences, reviewer for ~40 prestigious journals.
Dr. Yue is one of the recipients of the 2011 IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowship and 2011 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad. He received the Department Spotlight Award and CEO Team Excellence Award from Juniper Networks USA in 2016. He has been selected to 2014-2016 Edition of “Marquis Who's Who in America”, 2015-2016 Edition of “Marquis Who's Who in the World”, “IBC Top 100 Engineers 2015”, and “IBC Top 100 Professionals 2016”.
