  • Title: Advanced Photonic Technology Applied to Optical Monitoring of Key Atmospheric Trace Constituents
  • Abstract:

    Since the last decade, atmospheric environmental monitoring has benefited from the development of novel spectroscopic measurement techniques owing to the significant breakthroughs in photonic technology from the UV to the infrared spectral domain [1].

    In this presentation, we will overview our recent development and applications of high sensitivity spectroscopic instruments for in situ optical monitoring of key atmospheric trace constituents (such as CH4, N2O, HONO, NO3, NO2, N2O5, OH) in intensive campaigns [2], in smog chamber studies [3] and in laboratory investigation [4,5]. These results demonstrated that modern photonic technologies (newly emergent light sources combined with high sensitivity modern spectroscopic techniques) can provide a useful tool to improve our understanding of tropospheric chemical processes which affect climate and air quality.

  • Biography:

    Weidong CHEN B.S. in Radio-Physics (Zhangshan University, Guangzhou, China), M.S. and PhD from the University of Sciences & Technologies of Lille (USTL) in France, respectively. He was an assistant Professor (ATER) with the USTL from 1991 to 1993. He has been on the faculty at University of the Littoral Opal Coast (ULCO) in France as Lecturer since 1993, obtained his State PhD (HDR) in 2001 and became full Professor in 2003. 

    Current research interests : Developments of photonic instrumentation involving quantum cascade lasers, difference-frequency generation sources, diode DFB lasers, light emitting diodes combined with high sensitivity spectroscopic techniques such as off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (OA-ICOS), incoherent broadband cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy (IBBCEAS), Faraday rotation spectroscopy, photoacoustic and quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS & QEPAS), wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS), multipass direct absorption spectroscopy; Application of the developed photonic instruments in applied spectroscopy and optical metrology of atmospheric species : trace gases (concentration, isotope ratios) and aerosols (optical properties), in laboratory, in smog chamber and in field campaigns. 

    Synergistic activities 

    1) co-AUTHOR of over 130 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings and books, and 140 contributed papers at conferences. Over 40 Invited talks at scientific conferences and seminaries (USA, ETH Zurich, France, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Serbia, Hungary, Russia, Sweden, Ireland, UK , China).
